The Benefaction that saved the Priory

During the dissolution of the monasteries (1536-40), when Henry VIII seized the monasteries of England, the villagers of Cartmel saved the Priory Church, when they successfully petitioned that the Chapel, gifted about 1340 by Lord John Harrington, was their parish church.
Then around 1643, Cromwell’s soldiers ransacked the church …………
